Cape Town - In a display of extraordinary strength and determination, Haroun Pietersen, the powerlifting sensation from Mitchells Plain, brought home gold from the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships.
With each lift, Pietersen said he remembered his oath to his family, community and the country.
The competition, held at Sun City over the weekend, saw participants from all over the world, including England, Sri Lanka, Jamaica and New Zealand, show off their muscles.
Pietersen, who represented South Africa, said the competition was an extremely tight one, up until the end.
However, Pietersen managed to rise above his competitors, beating them by lifting a combined 800kgs.
“I actually placed second in the Squat and Bench Press categories, and even though I felt disappointed I knew I still had a chance to take the number one spot because by then the leader was 2.5kgs ahead of me.”
Pietersen said he put all his energy into the Deadlift category.
“I managed to push 285kg, which was the best lifter position for the day and also put me in the lead.
“When I looked up, I saw the guy who was leading, was now 32.5kgs behind me.
“I knew I did it and I owe it to my wife, family, community and country.”
Pietersen said when his name was called to take the number one spot, he was flooded with emotion.
“I wanted to scream ‘hoya’, that's how happy I was.
“It was every emotion that came together as a culmination of my entire journey in the sport.
“It was also a reminder that sometimes you won’t get victory immediately, but when you remain consistent and determined, you can get the overall result you want.
“I am just very proud and feel patriotic, especially to come from where I come from and to stand there with the gold around my neck for the country, it’s an auspicious occasion.”
Pietersen thanked his wife, Sakeena, coach Rodney Antony and the local businesses who supported him.
“Especially my wife, for being my video person, making sure I have love and support, and my snacks.”
A very proud Sakeena said her husband inspires her.
“His journey over the past two years has been nothing short of spectacular.
“His life’s journey continues to prove to me that nothing is impossible as long as you work towards your goals consistently.”
Pietersen is already training for the Africa Championships Games, where he will again represent SA in two weeks’ time.
“After that I will be taking a break, because unfortunately the finances to go to the Equips World and World IFP Classic in Germany is not there,” the world ranked number 10 said.
