Strict enforcement measures are in place for New Year’s Eve revelry across the metro, with the City advising that residents can be fined for setting off fireworks without a permit, selling fireworks to anyone under the age of 16, or allowing a person younger than 16 to handle fireworks without adult supervision.

“Despite the trauma and stress caused to pets and neighbourhoods, there are still those who delight in setting off fireworks. Annually we receive numerous calls of fireworks disturbances and injuries caused by these mini explosions.

“We encourage residents to supervise children and to celebrate responsibly,” said safety and security mayco member, JP Smith.

Fireworks may not be exploded within 200 metres of hospitals, clinics, petrol stations, old-age homes, nursing homes, or animal welfare organisations; inside any building or on a public street; in any other public place or recreational area, unless you have valid permission to do so.

Residents are requested to report any incident, suspicious behaviour or criminal activity by phoning the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 0214807700 from a cellphone and 107 from a landline.

Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town’s enforcement departments expect more than 35 000 people at the V&A Waterfront’s fireworks celebration.

The programme will include a controlled 5-minute fireworks display that can be viewed from anywhere within the Waterfront as well as from various viewpoints in the city.

“The V&A Waterfront is preparing to once again set the stage for a memorable evening of music and celebration for Capetonians and visitors to see off 2024 and usher in the new year.

“This year’s music line-up performs on a massive custom designed stage outlining Table Mountain, set for public viewing across the waters of the Waterfront.

“Guests can count down to the new year in style with an incredible line-up of artists including Matthew Mole, Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels, BlackByrd, Mi Casa and many more, for an unforgettable evening of festive entertainment. The concert officially starts at 6pm and runs until 1am.”
