Cape Town - The Cedar Gymnastics Club has been hailed for flying the Mitchells Plain flag high upon their return home on Monday.
The team recently scooped gold at the Gymnastics SA National Championships in Tshwane.
About 40 gymnasts from the club represented the province at the annual championships.
Categories for the games included aerobics, acrobatic, men’s-artistic, women’s-artistic, rhythmic, trampoline, rope-skipping, gym-for-all, and parkour.
Co-founder and chairperson of the club, Naeem Abrahams, said the team walked away as overall winners of the gym-for-all competition, a competition previously dominated by a Gauteng club for the past four years.
“It was a long and tough gym game this year but we are excited to be back home with at least one major trophy.
We also competed in acrobatics gymnastics where we won two silver and one bronze medal in group competitions and five silver and three bronze in the acrobatic competition.
“The sport is not only a source of uplifting our people but also a safe space for our children to express themselves and just be children,” Abrahams said.
Rocklands ward councillor Ashley Potts said the team participated in a number of additional competitions and continued their winning rhythm, making Mitchell’s Plain stand out.
“I for one, as ward councillor of the area, can’t be more proud that our own has achieved this accolade.
“The coach’s life story plays a huge role in this entire development, as she speaks her story through their performances.
Raising money to cover the cost for the team seemed impossible but they managed to hold to their commitment and ensure that every member of the team was able to take the trip. It’s humbling to see how little ones, as young as six-years-old were able to perform,” said Potts.
