Durban — Police have launched a manhunt following a cash-in-transit robbery in Durban on Monday.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said provincial police are searching for suspects in connection with a cash-in-transit robbery which happened on Wingen Walk in Shallcross, Chatsworth on Monday evening.
“The suspect also robbed the security guards of their two firearms before fleeing from the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries were reported,” Netshiunda said.
ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the service responded to an alleged cash-in-transit robbery in Olympia Street at a shopping centre in Shallcross.
He said paramedics arrived on the scene and found SAPS and multiple security officials in attendance and were shown to the scene where a cash vehicle had been bombed.
“Paramedics assessed two security officers who had sustained moderate injuries from the assault and robbery and they were stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required,” Jamieson said.
Meanwhile, in August when Police Minister Senzo Mchunu released the quarterly crime statistics, he said when comparing the two periods (the fourth quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year and the first quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year) the number of cash-in-transit heists in KZN, the Eastern Cape and Gauteng are still a concern, although the overall number has reduced.
“We will be meeting with various cash-in-transit companies to discuss measures aimed at curbing this crime,” Mchunu said at the time.
There were 40 cash-in-transit heists in South Africa in the fourth quarter (January to March) of the 2023/2024 financial year.
Twelve of the cash-in-transit heists were in KZN.
Then during the first quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year (April to June) 36 cash-in-transit heists were reported in SA.
Eleven cash-in-transit heists were in KZN.
