Durban — The Nelson Mandela Foundation has warned the public about a scam that uses a phone number that impersonates the foundation’s landline.
“The Nelson Mandela Foundation would like to advise the public that it is not offering any rewards or vouchers,” the foundation said in a statement.
“This warning comes after members of the public alerted the foundation to a scam that uses a cellphone number that closely mimics its landline number.”
The foundation said that individuals are phoned from 076 547 5600 (the foundation’s landline is 011 547 5600) and informed that their cellphone number has been randomly selected to receive a cash reward voucher and a voucher from a leading supermarket chain and that these are from the foundation, which is seeking to “give back to the nation”.
“This is a phishing scam. Please do not divulge any personal details on unsolicited phone calls or emails asking for them,” the foundation said.
