Despite not winning a 2024 Primetime Emmy Award, Trevor Noah has been welcomed to share the spotlight after “The Daily Show” scooped up an accolade.
The South African-born comedian hosted the renowned American satirical news and politics from September 2015 to December 2022, before handing back the reins to Jon Stewart.
“The Daily Show” won the Outstanding Talk Series prize at the 76th annual ceremony, which was held on Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Stewart then joked when asked by “TimesLIVE” in the press room about the possibility of bringing Noah back to the hosting desk.
“Am I being fired,” Stewart asked backstage.
“In all seriousness, that’d be lovely, the more the merrier. We have such a lovely family of outstanding talent through the years, from [Steve] Carell and [Stephen] Colbert, to [John] Oliver and Rob Corddry. All these incredible people have walked through the doors, and as you see, the incredible talent that stands on this stage.
“We always have a sense that we’re ‘borrowing’ [the comedians] because we understand some other producer who has more money than basic cable is going to say, ‘that person can do something great for us’.
“I’ve loved the family of collaborators we’ve built up over all the years, and the nice part about tonight is coming out and seeing everybody again.”
Noah has been nominated for 20 Emmy awards and won two, including Outstanding Talk Series in January. He won an Emmy in 2017 for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series.
But this year, the 40-year-old lost to Dick Van Dyke’s “98 Years of Magic” in the Outstanding Variety Special for his “Trevor Noah: Where Was I”.
In January, it was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, which was won by British comedian and actor Ricky Gervais for his comedy special “Armageddon”.
Earlier this year, Noah made history when he became the first black man to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Talk Series category at the 75th Emmy Awards. The previous edition of the awards were held January due to the writers' and actors' strikes that forced a delay in 2023.
Sharing the prize with his “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” team, the 40-year-old thanked the late-night talk show’s previous host Jon Stewart, during his acceptance speech.
“Wherever you are my friend, thank you for calling me up,” quipped Noah.
“This story has been so long, so crazy, so wonderful,” he added at the time.
Noah won his first Emmy in 2017 in the Outstanding Short Form Variety Series for his work on “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah”.
He also has several other accolades to his name, including five NAACP prizes, two MTV awards and an Erasmus Prize.
While the acclaimed comedian has left the talk show, he is currently the host of the Spotify podcast “What Now? with Trevor Noah” and interviewed Hollywood stars such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jessica Alba and Kevin Hart.
Next, he is set to release “Into The Uncut Grass”, a picture book teaching youngsters valuable life lessons.
Meanwhile, some of the biggest winners at the 2024 Emmys were “The Bear”, “Shogun”, “Baby Reindeer’ and “Hacks”.
