What's in a name? For US actor, Sterling K Brown, the answer is everything.

During a recent interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the two were chatting about how Clarkson learnt of her son's 'stage name'.

Clark shares two children, River Rose and Remington Alexander, with ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock. The conversation then shifted to why Brown changed his name.

Known for his roles in the Black Panther, Waves, American Fiction and This is Us, Brown shared the real reason why he opted to go by Sterling.

Speaking to Kelly Clarkson on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Brown,49, said he was named after his father and grandfather.

However, he went by his middle name, Kelby, until the age of 16.

"My dad's name is Sterling Brown Jnr and my grandfather was Sterling Brown Snr. I'm Sterling Kelby Brown.

"I wanted my own identity. I always thought Sterling was an old man name," he said.

Brown revealed that his father died when he (Brown) was 10-years-old and because he had not heard the name for five years or five-and-a-half years, he wanted to hear it again.

"I kinda just want to hear the name again. So I asked people to call me Sterling," he said.

The touching moment made both Brown and Clarkson emotional.

Brown is currently starring in Paradise, streamed on Hulu.
