If you're a lover of Italian films, make your way to the Cape Town International Film Market and Festival where a selection of the country’s nine top movies will be presented this month at venues at the V&A Waterfront.
Italian directors and producers will be present to chat about their work. A panorama of genres and stories gives witness to vitality, creativity, authorship and also a nod to the current tastes.
The selection includes comedy and drama, embracing a wide spectrum of social and cultural issues, from youth marginalisation, to new immigration, to identity and couple crises
Complex issues are tackled with precision and originality, with an “Italian Style”, where often a smile, a meaningful gesture or an ironic joke explain much more than the usual dialogues, say the organisers.
We’ll be Young and Beautiful digs into the mother/son relationship, Just Believe ironically portrays our religious world, Dogman is a scientific masterpiece about revenge, Sembra Mio Filgio and The Ball deal with migration and identity. The Place makes an ordinary café the centre of our life and maybe something more, while I’m Back is about the ghosts of the Italian past.
Also being screened is The World is Flat and Isabelle, both world premieres by two promising directors.
The event is supported by Mibac (Italian Ministry of Culture), ICC Pretoria (Italian Institute of Culture) and the Italian Consulate.
The Italian delegation will also collaborate with local film schools such as Big Fish and City Varsity, which has seen the younger audience grow.
The festival runs from October 9-19, at Nu Metro and SK Nouveau at the V&A Waterfront; reduced admission at R50.
