Durban - The Dlaminis were the most productive baby-makers in South Africa last year, with 6 281 babies issued with birth certificates with that surname.
This was revealed by the Statistics South Africa’s Recorded Live Births paper, released on Tuesday.
Dlamini was followed by Ntuli, with 5 899 babies born with that surname.
Rounding up the top five surnames were Ngubane, Ndlovu and Nkosi.
Of the 886 202 babies born last year, 1 137 were named Junior, making it the most popular baby name.
The most popular name for girls was the Xhosa name Iminathi, meaning “He is with us” – a reference to God.
“Overall, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal had the highest number of births compared with other provinces and most occurred during January, March and September,” the report noted.
Gauteng recorded 196 000 births, KwaZulu-Natal 177 000 births and Limpopo 112 000 births.
