Durban – Msunduzi Municipality will partner with Maritzburg United Football Club in an attempt to clean up the city of Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday.
Pietermaritzburg has been battling with filth, and was once said to be the dirtiest city in South Africa.
Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Ntobeko Mkhize said the campaign was aimed at creating awareness for everyone to play their part in ensuring that the KZN capital is clean at all times.
“In an effort to work together in keeping the city clean, the municipality in partnership with Maritzburg United will embark on a clean-up campaign on Church Street, between Chapel and Boshoff Street,” said Mkhize.
The municipality believes that the partnership with the team that is playing in the Premier Soccer League will help get more people to join in the clean up effort.
“This campaign is an initiative of Maritzburg United to promote cleanliness and environmental awareness among residents and businesses.
“It also involves collaborative efforts between internal and external stakeholders to optimise environmental awareness and the city's cleaning efforts,” she added.
Maritzburg United owner Farook Kadodia said as a club within the city they owe it to the city to be part of such initiatives.
He expressed the hope that more people would be getting involved in maintaining cleanliness in the the city.
“Tomorrow we have a great clean-up campaign. There is a huge need to clean up the city in trying to get it back to its old self.
“What is most exciting is that not only Maritzburg United will be involved but there are other businesses that will be part of this,” the club owner explained.
“This is just our little contribution as a club to the city, so the partnership is very good and the cause that it stands for goes well with the values of Maritzburg United as a football club, ” said Kadodia.
