Monte Carlo, Monaco - Renault has brought its iconic Alpine nameplate a step closer to rebirth with the Vision concept - a modern interpretation of the A110 Berlinette of the 1970s.
Presenting the concept on the crest of the Col de Turini, one of the most intimidating stages of the Monte Carlo Rally - and where Alpine drivers would regularly outrun more powerful machines back in the day - Renault chief executive Carlos Ghosn said the Vision was “very close” to the production model that would be unveiled by the end of this year and go on sale in 2017.
He said the choice of the name “reflects our determination to stay true to Alpine's heritage while offering a car that is thoroughly modern”.

The A110's sweeping curves and sweeping success on the European rally circuit brought the brand renown in the 1970s, but by 1995 Renault put the brand in mothballs despite staying involved in racing.
Ghosn said the car’s new turbopetrol four and lightweight chassis - both developed by Renault Sport - would help the Vision accelerate from zero to 100km/h in less than 4.5 seconds, better than a Porsche 911 Carrera.
“Alpine with its rich history is the obvious way to enter the premium sports-car market,” said Ghosn. “Despite the fact that no Alpine cars have rolled off the line since 1995, Alpine still represents the dream of racing glory, performance, and passion for enthusiasts around the world.

“This is the next step in our strategy to leverage talent and technology between road and track, and we look forward to reaching new customers in the premium sports-car segment.”
The new production car will be built in the original Alpine plant in Dieppe and yes, there are plans to go racing with it; the current Signatech-Alpine team has already won two European endurance championships with the A450 LMP2 prototype racing car, and won its class in the World Endurance Championship at Shanghai in 2015.
The team has already entered two A450s in the 2016 World Endurance Championship, including the Le Mans 24 Hours.
