Johannesburg - In an attempt to counter the popular conception of Chinese cars as cheap and cheerful, Chery SA has loaded its J2 mid-sized hatch with a grab-bag of upmarket features and called it, rather unkindly we thought, the Swag.
It's aimed at independent, active younger people, says the media release, who Chery is apparently hoping will be more interested in what's inside than the badge on the bonnet.
ALL THE SWAG
And what's inside is full leather trim, air conditioning, power steering, electric windows, touch-screen satellite navigation, see-me-home headlights, central locking, an alarm/immobiliser and a six-speaker radio/CD/MP3 player with a USB port and Bluetooth streaming capability.
Mechanically, it's identical to the standard J2, with a 72kW, 1.5-litre petrol four driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual box - except for rather stylish 17 inch, 10-spoked alloy rims.
It sells for R154 900, which includes a five-year or 120 000km warranty and a two-year or 30 000km service plan.
