GM has pulled the covers off its Chevrolet SS. Based on the new Holden Commodore, the muscle-sedan will be the first V8-powered rear-wheel drive Chevrolet sedan to be sold in the USA since 1996. It's also a logical replacement for SA's Lumina SS. GMSA can't give us any specific details as yet, but they have told us that an updated model is on the way.
The Aussie saloon takes a useful step up the performance ladder with the current 270kW 6-litre V8 being replaced by 309kW version of the new 6.2-litre LS3 V8 found in the latest Corvette.
The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox and there's no word on a manual version at this stage.
FIVE-SECOND SPRINTER
Not only is the new SS more powerful, but numerous measures, including an aluminium bonnet and boot lit, make it lighter than its predecessor. The superior power to weight ratio, says Chevrolet, will get it from 0-100km/h in the region of five seconds.
A standard Brembo braking system with 355mm rotors and four-piston front callipers, has been tasked with bringing Bruce's brute to a halt.
What's more, its sport-tuned chassis is suitably sophisticated and includes a multi-link rear axle.
American models boast a long list of standard features, including power-adjustable leather seats, MyLink touch-screen infotainment system, nine-speaker Bose premium audio system, colour heads-up display, start button and Lane Departure Warning.
Americans might not put shrimps on the barbie, but their affinity with powerful rear-drive sedans should ensure that this Aussie brute gains a loyal following.
