In a remarkable achievement, Zulaikha Patel has become the first South African to be personally selected for a prestigious week-long intensive program in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Kofi Annan Changemakers Initiative, launched in 2021 and supported by Ambassador Jenö Staehelin’s Foundation, is a platform designed to elevate the voices of young leaders addressing critical global challenges. Over a year, participants will engage in mentorship, intergenerational dialogue with experts and international leaders, and comprehensive capacity-building sessions.

The initiative also provides seed grant funding to support the expansion of their impactful projects.

Held in mid-November, this exclusive opportunity culminated in Zulaikha pitching a groundbreaking flagship program on November 22, aimed at establishing an Early Childhood Development (ECD) library corner, made possible by a seed grant.

This accomplishment is the culmination of Zulaikha's rigorous online coursework from June to November, which focused on cultivating leadership, advocacy, and innovative thinking skills.

In addition to personal and professional development, the initiative provides participants access to a global network of leaders and changemakers, equipping them with the resources to implement sustainable solutions for the challenges they address.

At just 22 years old, Zulaikha Patel has already made a profound impact as a vocal anti-racism activist, accomplished author, and passionate advocate for educational equality.

Her tireless efforts have earned her a prestigious spot as one of 14 global leaders selected for the esteemed Kofi Annan Changemakers Initiative 2024. This notable recognition honors Zulaikha's unwavering dedication to combating literacy poverty and her innovative endeavors to promote inclusive education systems in South Africa.

Zulaikha has made a significant impact as a leader, thinker, and advocate. As the founder of Dare To Change, Zulaikha has spearheaded projects to improve literacy levels and create accessible educational opportunities for underprivileged communities.

Her flagship project, establishing school library corners, seeks to nurture a culture of reading and learning in underserved areas.

Zulaikha’s broader vision includes developing a decolonized African anti-racism feminist course, intended to be a transformative tool used in schools, universities, and workshops.

The course addresses systemic racism and promotes equity and inclusion, equipping young people with the skills and knowledge to challenge societal norms and foster meaningful change.

Speaking on her selection as a 2024 Changemaker, Zulaikha said: “This recognition is not just about me but about the collective work being done to create opportunities for children and young people in South Africa. Through the Kofi Annan Changemakers Initiative, I hope to amplify these efforts and inspire others to join the fight for equality and justice.”

A global platform for South African leadership

Zulaikha Patel’s recognition as a Kofi Annan Changemaker highlights the potential of South African youth to lead transformative global efforts.
