A quiet game of golf got a whole lot more exciting when a huge alligator was spotted on the course.

Golfers gazed in wonder as the creature strolled towards a lake where it is thought to live on the course in Palmetto, Florida.

Charles Helms, who was playing the Buffalo Creek course on Sunday and filmed the drama on his mobile, said: “It was just laying down, resting, when it got up and started moving.”

One Facebook user commented: “It looks like it came out of Jurassic Park!”

It turned out the alligator is a regular at the course. Wendy Schofield, who works there, said: “He doesn’t bother anybody. He’s like a mascot.”

The alligator is estimated to be 15 to 16ft long, bigger than the 14ft official record for an alligator in Florida.
