The festive season is a highly anticipated time for road trips, family holidays, and fun outings. It’s also, a period of, increased traffic, crowded parking, unfamiliar environments, and higher alcohol consumption. With these risks comes an increase in the likelihood of accidents and minor vehicle damages.

From 2022 to 2023, the registered vehicle population in South Africa increased by 168 605. In November 2024, new vehicle sales in the country hit a new record of nearly 50 000 units that month alone pointing to an unprecedented number of cars on the road this holiday season.

Holidays should be about creating memories, not worrying about unforeseen damages to your vehicle. Scratches and dents, though minor, can disrupt your festivities and put an unnecessary strain on your finances.

It is valuable and practical to safeguard against unexpected repair costs caused by scratches or dents.

Comprehensive cover for holiday mishaps

According to local repair industry data, the average cost to repair minor vehicle damages, like a shallow dent the size of a coin, often starts at around R550. Deep scratches on bumpers can cost anything up to R4,000, while severe damage, such as hail, might necessitate panel replacements starting from R3,000 per panel. The overall costs depend on factors like the severity of the damage and the type of vehicle involved.

Ignoring these damages can lead to a reduction in your car's resale value and, over time, the potential for rust and corrosion that escalates repair needs. While some opt for professional services, the expense for frequent repairs highlights the importance of maintenance as well as adequate insurance to keep costs manageable.

South African motorists often overlook taking out scratch and dent cover. This decision is often driven by the misconception that minor damages can be fixed affordably or delayed indefinitely. There is also the belief that claiming for minor damages such as scratches and dents will lead to increased premiums.

Minor damages are more common this time of year, especially in busy shopping centres and tourist spots that receive higher-than-normal traffic. The scratch-and-dent cover provides an affordable way to manage these situations, sparing you the pain of an unexpected repair bill.
