Pretoria - Mabopane driving school operators and motorists have welcomed the repair of potholes on the busy M39 road by commuters who took matters into their own hands.
They had been complaining about the road just after Giant Stadium, heading to Winterveldt, was plagued by potholes over the years.
Earlier this year, the City of Tshwane launched the Bon Accord quarry crusher plant to produce asphalt to repair potholes without having to rely on external suppliers.
Yesterday, driving school operator Oupa Seanego said: “This is good work that is long overdue because we have been watching our roads deteriorate for years, and we were tired and even hopeless, especially for that portion of the road.
“It cannot be that for years, once you drive after Giant Stadium you must slow down if you are heading in the direction of Winterveldt and Mabopane. That says something is wrong here.”
Koketso Nkosi said: “You can imagine how difficult it can be to try teach someone how to drive a truck on these roads with many potholes.”
Motorist and Mabopane resident Thabiso Mthimkhulu said: “We will be happy if the City of Tshwane could finally repair all these potholes and where possible, refurbish the road.”
MMC for Finance Peter Sutton and his counterpart in Roads and Transport Dikeledi Selowa earlier this year told Pretoria News that the city was waging a war on potholes.
At the time, they said they were playing catch-up and coming up with innovative ways to repair the potholes as quickly as possible.
