In a recent study by Compare the Market AU, South Africa has been identified as one of the world's most challenging countries for drivers, placing eighth in a global ranking of driving stress.

The report evaluates an array of factors affecting driver experience, revealing a complex mixture of challenges and advantages that South African motorists face daily.

Among the factors contributing to this high-stress ranking are issues such as road safety concerns, including high theft rates and fatalities.

The study also highlights global trends, noting a dramatic increase in the number of searches for ‘stress while driving’, which have surged by over 100% in the last year.

This reflects a growing concern for drivers worldwide about the pressures they encounter on the roads.

Despite the challenges, the analysis done by Compare the Market AU also uncovers some positive aspects of driving in South Africa.

Notably, the country offers one of the lowest parking prices globally; at just 1.33 USD for two hours, South Africa ranks second in terms of affordability, which can alleviate some financial stress for drivers.

Furthermore, the report notes that road quality and average congestion levels in South Africa provide a comparatively decent driving environment when stacked against other countries.

The research reveals that, while South Africa is indeed a stressful place to drive, it is not the most distressing. Romania takes the unenviable top spot as the world’s most challenging country for drivers, while the Netherlands emerges as the least stressful driving nation.

Adrian Taylor, Executive General Manager of General Insurance at Compare the Market AU, commented on the findings, emphasising that much of the driving experience is influenced not just by personal behaviour but also by the decisions of others and infrastructural deficits.

"Driving can be a stressful experience, with so many things to consider for a safe and stress-free driving experience – however, it doesn’t help that many of these factors rely on the behaviour of other drivers and the road infrastructure," said Taylor.

He also advised drivers to review their car insurance policies, reminding them of the importance of coverage that addresses vital issues like theft and third-party damage.

In conclusion, the findings from Compare the Market AU present a nuanced picture for South African drivers. While the country certainly faces challenges, elements such as affordable parking and reasonable road quality offer a silver lining in the otherwise tumultuous driving landscape.
