Still just 20 years old, Curwin Bosch’s youthful features belie the rugby experience the talented player has already picked up.
From his heroics at multiple Craven Weeks, to stepping up in Pat Lambie’s absence, to earning a Bok cap, there is not much that Bosch has left to achieve.
However, for the young Sharks man, he is far from ready to say he has reached the pinnacle, and is much more intent on carrying on learning, and gaining experience as his career continues to flourish.
Bosch will have a critical season ahead of him at the Sharks as he looks to assert himself in a competitive backline, and as a complete rugby player on the global circuit. His raw talent has been apparent since day one, it is now about gaining the necessary experience and utilising it.
“I don’t want to look too far ahead,” Bosch responded when asked about aspirations for the upcoming season. “I do want to add to my Bok caps, but for me the most important thing in the position that I’m in, at flyhalf, it is about learning and getting better in every aspect of the game.”
Bosch realises that at pivot, he has a lot of responsibility in his hands when it comes to directing a team, and that level of control and assertiveness needed to be a great 10 can only come with experience.
“I think it is a complicated position for young guys coming through,” Bosch added about the No 10 role. “I want to build experience in that position and get better in every aspect of the game.”
He won’t be having it all his own way when it comes to the N o 10 jersey being handed out on game days however, as there is stiff competition across the backline, and even in his preferred position.
Another player vying for that jersey is new recruit, but KZN local, Robert du Preez Jnr.
When asked about the competition that faces him for a starting spot, Bosch again saw the positives, indicating it is another opportunity to learn, and get better
“I see it more as a learning experience for me,” Bosch went on. “I try to learn from everyone as much as I can, and especially Rob, he has been around, he has played for the Barbarians, so for me it is a learning experience. I can learn something new from him, he can learn from me, and that is great.”
It is also a positive thing for the team, Bosch adds, reinforcing the fact that it is all healthy competition and there is no nastiness to it.
“The competition is very healthy, there is nothing here where I want to try and outdo him, of course, everyone wants to start, but at the end of the day, it’s what’s best for the team and it is us learning from each other,” Bosch concluded.
