Actress and DJ Pearl Thusi recently visited award-winning influencer Mihlali Ndamase’s YouTube channel, where the two revealed the best and worst part of being in the public eye.
A range of questions were posed to the Mzansi celebrities. Here’s how they responded:
What’s the best and worst part of being a celebrity?
Thusi said: “Everything has an equal and opposite reaction … There is nothing on this planet that doesn’t have its worst parts. For me, I love the fact that there are days that I can wake up when I feel like it, rather then having to report to someone – that must be terrible.
“However, then there is also the negative parts of what we have to do, so I would say the fact that people can just wake up and create false narratives about you along the way.”
Ndamase shared that the best part of her job was being able to travel the world, while getting paid for it. She agreed with Thusi about the worst part of fame was how people wrote negative and false things about her.
“They completely disregard the fact that you are a human being. They disregard the fact that you have feelings, you have a family. As much as I have a very thick skin, but sometimes I’m like: ‘Geez!’ How would you feel if you were reading this about your kid and it’s not even true?’”
What’s your best and worst travel experiences?
Thusi said her best travel experiences was in Rwanda where she got to walk with gorillas in the wild.
Another memory that came to mind was her trip to Jamaica.
“It was when I travelled to Jamaica for ‘Tropika Island of Treasure’. It was myself, Da Les, Kiernan (Forbes), Reeva (Steenkamp), Mario … We literally had the best time.
“It was such a powerful experience, and whenever I miss Reeva or Kiernan, that was literally where we all became friends. Jamaica is a really incredible place to visit.
Ndamase said she was the happiest went she visited Barcelona: “Every single aspect of it was so fulfilling. I think I was still at a young age, so I was very excited about travelling … I appreciated the experience more.
And her worst was when she was recently in Miami and her luggage was stolen.
The best and worst feedback you’ve received for your job?
Thusi shared: “It’s crazy how much feedback I get from ‘Catching Feelings’ and ‘Queen Sono’, like powerful feedback. People can’t believe it was cancelled. Also, when I travel to the US, people still ask: ‘Oh my God, are you Queen Sono?’, it’s really encouraging.
“In the same breath, my worst feedback has been from home … I have been ‘apparently’ bad in every single thing I have done and I’ve done a lot of good things, so people who don’t like you are just going to think everything you do is just terrible, and you have to make peace with that.”
