The Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA) says it is disturbed by escalating levels of crime that continue to plague KwaZulu-Natal and severely impact public servants and communities.
The union’s statement comes after a female teacher was shot dead at Phikiswayo Primary School in Ntuzuma on Monday morning.
Provincial PSA chairperson Mlungisi Ndlovu said the horrific incident underscored the urgent need for decisive action to safeguard teachers, support staff and pupils.
He said the union expressed its condolences to employees, pupils and the families affected by the tragic loss at Phikiswayo Primary School.
Ndlovu said the PSA stood in solidarity with those impacted and reiterated its commitment to advocate for a safe working environment for all in KZN.
Ndlovu said violent incidents had subjected pupils to lifelong trauma.
“The PSA in KwaZulu-Natal urges the MEC for Education to take immediate and robust measures to enhance safety and security in schools,” said Ndlovu.
He appealed to the premier of the province and the police commissioner to address the crimes that had claimed the lives of numerous workers.
Ndlovu said the lack of significant and effective measures by relevant departments and communities was a glaring matter that demanded immediate attention.
“Several public servants in KwaZulu-Natal have been killed in the line of duty, highlighting the pressing need for a comprehensive and strategic response to this crisis. The PSA demands that stringent and effective interventions be implemented without delay,” he said.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the police in Ntuzuma were investigating a case of murder after gunmen killed a a woman on school premises.
“The two unknown suspects fired several shots at the victim and fled the scene. The woman was declared dead at the scene,” said Colonel Netshiunda.
