Police have apprehended 409 suspects in Garsfontein and Pretoria-Moot during Operation Shanela for various offences.

The operation focused on key priorities, including removing unlicensed firearms, apprehending wanted suspects, and enforcing liquor licence compliance.

According to Tshwane District Communication Coordinator Captain Johan van Dyk, the first phase of the operation led to the apprehension of 316 individuals for serious offences, including 96 arrests for gender-based violence, 46 for assault with intent to cause grievous-bodily harm, four for murder, three for attempted murder, nine for armed robbery, and one for rape.

He added that 79 undocumented individuals were detained and are awaiting legal processes for deportation with three people being arrested and fined for employing illegal immigrants.

Van Dyk further stated that several suspects were arrested for drug possession.

“Three suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs, with 36 Ziplock bags containing various substances and an undisclosed amount of cash found in their possession. One person was arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes when 35 packets were found in his possession,” he said.

During the first phase of the operation, 1,201 individuals and 680 vehicles were checked, while 32 vehicles were tested to verify if they had been stolen.

Additionally, two people were arrested for possession of dangerous weapons, two others for fraud, and one for a domestic violence-related offence.
