The entertainment fraternity is mourning the death of yet another iconic figure in the arts following the passing of musician, actor and director Timmy Kwebulana.
Celebrated for being more than just an actor, Kwebulana has also been praised for his storytelling abilities, cultural significance and musical prowess, all of which he used to inspire and uplift many people.
He appeared on well-known television shows such as Abakwazidenge, Ingqumbo Yeminyanya, Unyana Womntu, Uthando Lwethu, Shooting Stars, Forced Love and Isikizi. He also connected viewers to their roots, struggles and triumphs, demonstrating talent, resilience and humility.
Kwebulana also earned praise for a multitude of accomplishments, including being a talented drummer and well-known actor who helped to establish Cape Town’s jazz culture by performing with jazz greats.
His family revealed that Kwebulana passed away after a brief illness at the age of 83 on the evening of September 19.
“It is with sadness that the Kwebulana family officially announce the passing of long-time musician, actor and director, Mr Timmy Kwebulana, on the evening of September 19, 2024, after a short illness.
“We give thanks for his life and all his contributions to us as a family and to the arts and entertainment industry for almost six decades. May his legacy continue to inspire us and those who are still to come.
“We acknowledge that there will be lots of heartfelt messages of condolences towards the family and relatives. We appreciate them so much. However, we do request, especially the media and our industry colleagues, that the family be given some time to gather and organise logistics and the way forward.
“Any media and official statements will be made by the family representative, Mr Hlubi Kwebulana ([email protected]).”
In the statement, the family said further details would be announced in due course.
Penguin Films, a film and television company producing local and international content, highlighted that Kwebulana would be missed for the unforgettable roles he played.
“It is with great sadness that we learn of Timmy Kwebulana’s passing. He was a lead in Velaphi and went on to play many unforgettable roles for Penguin Films. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and community. RIP Timmy. You’ll be deeply missed.”
In the same month, the entertainment industry bade farewell to actor Sello Motloung and veteran actor Darlington Michaels, whose deaths left many reeling in shock.
