As Capetonians face severe weather, the Woolworths Trust has donated R100 000 to humanitarian and disaster aid organisation Gift of the Givers to spearhead a helping hand to affected residents.
The donation comes after residents’ homes were destroyed by heavy floods and strong winds.
“In light of the severe weather across our country right now, the Woolworths Trust has donated R100K to Gift of the Givers Foundation, our disaster relief partner, to support those who need it most,” wrote Woolies on its social media pages.
With a severe cold front expected on Friday, according to the South African Weather Service (Saws), Gift of the Givers has aided about 15 000 Capetonians, especially residents in informal settlements.
“The numbers are increasing as most people in informal settlements are calling for assistance, such as Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha. We scattered ourselves and set up teams to ensure in this dire time, we reach out to more communities as much as possible. Our teams are working through the night to ensure that people are safe,” said Gift of the Givers project manager Ali Sablay.
Sablay told SABC News that the numbers of the affected are climbing, hence the organisation is working closely with relevant NGOs, local municipalities and the City of Cape Town. So far, Gift of the Givers has donated 10 000 meals and 3 000 blankets in Khayelitsha.
Similarly, Pick n Pay has lent a helping hand with an additional R100 000 donation, including a donation drop-off at stores in the Western Cape for customers who want to donate food parcels, toiletries and clothes.
According to head of Environmental, Social and Governance at Pick n Pay, Vaughan Pierce, it is of critical importance to support flood victims as it shows the spirit of Ubuntu and togetherness during a crucial time.
“We are committed to doing everything we can to support communities during this challenging time, and we know our customers are too. Our store managers have been inundated with requests to help. It is incredible to witness the power of togetherness during these times, and Pick n Pay will always be a place the community can turn to for support,” said Pierce.
He further encouraged customers to flock in numbers and support the initiative, by donating non-perishable food items, warm clothes and blankets.
“Stores have been mobilising staff to assist communities in need on the ground. They are also setting up daily food stations to ensure those displaced have access to nutritious meals, which are distributed to the hardest-hit areas. We urge everyone who can join us to support those affected by the terrible winds and flooding in many parts of the region. Your donations can make a significant difference in the lives of many,” said Pierce.
