RESIDENTS at Lakeview in Dlamini who have not been getting mail since September, are now seeing postmen delivering letters – even on a Sunday.

A strike by postmen from Dlamini is believed to be behind the problem. The smaller Chiawelo post office mail depot gives its mail to Dlamini and its postmen to deliver around Soweto on their bicycles.

Postal workers said the striking Dlamini postmen were fired and new ones employed. However, the dismissed workers are alleged to have attacked the new postmen. That caused more delays in residents getting their mail.

Residents claim they were told there were not enough bicycles, but SA Post Office spokesman Khulani Qoma said this was untrue. “All 33 delivery bicycles at the Chiawelo mail depot are in good condition. We keep spare bicycles that can be utilised in the event of a need arising.”
